What is an Incognito brace?
An Incognito brace is a fitted, metal brace that uses tightening and adjustments to move your teeth.
However, unlike the standard orthodontic brace that is affixed to the front of the teeth, the Incognito brace is attached to the back, making it a more visually discrete option. Its use will require you to attend hygienist appointments more regularly, to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout the treatment.
Do the adjustments hurt?
Sadly, even in this time of invisible aligners and dental implants, there is still no such thing as a completely comfortable orthodontic treatment!
This is simply because this brace relies on tightening and adjusting to moving your teeth, which are probably in an unfortunate position for you to require such a brace. However, the good news is that any discomfort you may feel during and just after any adjustment should be manageable with over the counter pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
If you find that you are experiencing intense discomfort following any adjustment made by your dentist or orthodontist, then you should book a follow-up appointment so your teeth can be assessed.
How long is the treatment time?
As this brace is fitted, it can treat more complex issues than an invisible aligner, such as cases that require molar movement, more complicated bite issues and problems with extreme protrusion.
And so, the treatment time on average is a lot longer for most patients, ranging from 18-36 months. To obtain a more accurate timespan of how long you will need to wear this brace, talk to your dentist.
Does this brace cause root issues?
There is no evidence that wearing a fitted brace of any kind causes issues with the roots or the jaw.
And so, when you start wearing the Incognito brace, you can rest assured that it will not cause any long term issues to your teeth or oral health.
Are they more expensive than regular braces?
On average, lingual braces are more expensive than regular braces.
But this is not because they are clear or hidden; it is because they require additional training for orthodontists and dentists to be able to use them. And also, the fitting and adjusting require special tools that are not found in the standard orthodontist tool kit.
Also, as is the way with fitted traditional braces, it often takes this brace up to 3 years to straighten a smile, which means a few trips to your dentist to have them tightened or adjusted. All of these appointments and adjustments are factored into the final cost, alongside the overall-wearing time.
